Biannual Biosolids Production and End-Use Survey now underway The ANZBP's biannual production and use survey is now underway. Producers can expect to be contacted by consultants PSD (Australia) and Stantec (NZ). Your data will help to maintain our comprehensive records of production and End-use since 2009.
ANZBP Chair Kelly Hopewell won the Best Presentation at QWater Conference
There were many excellent presentations at the Australian Water Association QWater Conference on the Gold Coast last week, so it was a great achievement for ANZBP Chair Kelly Hopewell's to be awarded Best Presentation. Kelly’s presentation, “From little things big things grow: lessons learnt from an environmental PFAS investigation” was highly entertaining and provided food for thought on how best to manage contaminants of emerging concern.
ANZBP Biosolids Lunch&Learn Webinar November 2021 Last month, we had the third ANZBP Biosolids Lunch&Learn Webinar with 85 participants. During the webinar, Dr Doris Blaesing (RMCG) presented on the ‘Sustainable use of Biosolids on Agricultural Land – Benefits and risks relating to phosphorus’, and Zoe Rogers (Hunter Water) presented on ‘Emerging chemical contaminants and microplastics in biosolids’. Australian-First Technology – The Next Step in Biosolids Innovation Transforming Local Circular Economies a finalist in AWA’s Victorian Water Awards South East Water, Greater Western Water and Intelligent Water Networks have been nominated as finalists for the Australian Water Association’s Victorian Water Awards Research and Development Excellence Award (Sponsored by Water Research Australia) for their work on biosolids in the circular economy. Winners will be announced at the Victorian 58th Annual Awards Gala to be held at Crown Melbourne on 23 February 2022. Read more

US EPA AwardsNearly $6 Million for Research on Potential Risks from Pollutants Found in Biosolids. In September the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced almost $6m in funding to four institutions for research to support states, municipalities, and utilities in determining the potential risks to human health and the environment from pollutants found in biosolids, including PFAS. The recipients are John Hopkins University, Michigan State University, Virginia Institute of Marine Science and The Water Research Foundation. Read more
US EPA Releases PFAS Strategic Roadmap In October, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency EPA Administrator Michael Regan announced the agency’s PFAS Strategic Roadmap: EPA's Commitments to Action 2021-2024. The US EPA Council on PFAS developed this strategic roadmap to lay out a whole-of-agency approach to addressing PFAS using a lifecycle approach. The road map focuses on three main directives: research, restrict, and remediate PFAS. Read more
Aries Linden Biosolids Gasification Plant Achieves Mechanical Completion Aries has reached another major milestone, achieving mechanical completion of the Aries Linden Biosolids Gasification Plant in Linden, New Jersey. This fluidised bed gasification plant is currently the largest facility of its type in the world. Commissioning is underway and is expected to be completed over the next few months. Read more
